New York, NY—July 1, 2010 – The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) is pleased to announce the second and final application round for the Strengthening Communities Fund (SCF) Nonprofit Capacity Building program. NYCON received a nationally competitive $1,000,000  two-year stimulus grant created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will award $600,000 of the grant over two competitive funding rounds to eligible community and faith-based nonprofits in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx who are providing services that are vital to the economic recovery efforts.

NYCON’s SCF program will work to build the capacity of eligible community and faith-based organizations that provide job training, job readiness, and benefits assistance in NYC, specifically to organizations located in and/or serving low-income / underserved individuals in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.  These three boroughs have been hard hit by the recession and the poverty and unemployment rates demonstrate the need for strong and effective nonprofits to assist residents with obtaining jobs, job skills, increased wages, and access to state and federal benefits and tax credits.

The SCF program will work to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations through free trainings, scholarships, consulting services and financial assistance.  NYCON has partnered in this initiative with the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York, Inc., the Support Center for Nonprofit Management, and the Women’s Center for Education and Career Advancement.

The second and final application for Component # 1: Access to free Nonprofit Trainings is a rolling deadline August 1st through November 8th, 2010.

The second and final round of applications for Component #2: Technical and Financial Assistance is due November 8, 2010.

Visit www.nycon.org to register for the upcoming SCF Information Sessions scheduled in September & October 2010 to learn more about the SCF program.

For more information on the program, please contact Jennifer Lockwood, SCF Program Manager via email at jlockwood@nycon.org, via phone 1-800-515-5012 x. 152.

NYCON’s Strengthening Communities Fund (SCF) Program is comprised of two components:

Component #1:
Training and Education. NYCON will provide access to and scholarships for free training, access to an online learning community, and consulting support to 80 community and faith-based organizations.  These organizations will be known as “Program Participants.”  The SCF program will offer an extraordinarily comprehensive range of free training opportunities to meet the needs, interests, and goals of eligible community and faith-based organizations who participate in this program.

Component #2: Funding and Technical Assistance. Program Participants will be able to compete to receive a grant ranging from $10,000 to $24,000 and receive 50 hours of free technical assistance provided by NYCON.  Both the funding awards and technical assistance are designed to build organizational capacity.  Approximately 30 SCF Program Participants will be awarded financial and technical assistance and these sub-awardees will be known as “Project Partners.”
