NYCON Celebrates Roots with Recognition from Governor Cuomo and Others

NYCON Celebrates Roots with Commemorative Garden, Recognition from Governor Cuomo and Others

June 27th, 2017 Albany, NY - The New York Council of Nonprofits is celebrating its 90th Anniversary milestones throughout 2017.  Earlier in the year the board and staff recognized the day NYCON was conceptualized by taking a look back at memorable moments and featuring notable milestones and photos of board and staff leadership through the years.

To celebrate the day NYCON formalized on June 27th, 1927, NYCON held a “Celebrating Our Roots” day.  Staff and board members gathered at the NYCON Corporate Office in Menands, NY to spruce up the grounds and to plant a commemorative garden with a 90th Anniversary tree, as well as 23 flowers intended to honor the 23 founding nonprofit members of the organization. Three of the founding members are still active members with NYCON to this day, and a special recognition was given to Deanne Grimaldi of Legal Services of Northeastern New York who attended the event.

“If most people have never heard of NYCON, that's because our mission is to strengthen our member nonprofits - the direct services that improve our communities. We are here to help them meet their goals” stated Tom Clingan, long-time supporter and alumni Board Member.

NYCON’s history and achievements were also recognized by elected leaders statewide. Representatives from Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office, Representative Paul Tonko’s office, New York State Assemblyman Phil Steck’s office, and County Executive Danial McCoy’s office were on hand to read proclamations and citations honoring NYCON’s rich past of community building and provision of support services that have been critical to the health of the nonprofit sector in New York State.

“Even though we’re celebrating 90 years, our agency is still evolving to meet the needs of New York State nonprofits” reflected Doug Sauer, CEO of NYCON. “We wouldn’t be here without our members, partners and volunteers, so we are looking forward to spotlighting six of our nonprofit members from now until the end of the year to share their stories. There are so many great charities out there, so we couldn’t think of a better way than to celebrate our anniversary with highlighting the nonprofit community across the state.”  The first member spotlight began the week of June 26th with St. Paul’s Center, Inc., based in Rensselaer, NY, an emergency and transitional home for mothers and their children.
