Health & Safety Advocate-The YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County

Job Duties:

  1. Conduct initial intakes, orientation and exit interviews.  Assist women with basic needs when the Emergency Housing Assistant is not on site and the client is planning to enter or exit.

  2. Enforce rules and regulations at the shelter (i.e., enforcing the drug and alcohol-free environment, enforcing curfew, and quiet hours)

  3. Assist clients with completing their chores, etc.

  4. Assist clients with completing the MCDHS application so that they are ready for their appointment the following business day.

  5. Helping clients identify and use coping skills to help alleviate symptoms of clients mental health or substance abuse issues.

  6. Help mediate arguments with clients.

  7. Maintain a cleaning schedule, ensure there are no safety hazards or maintenance issues.

  8. Facilitate groups relating to, but not exclusive to, maintaining a hygienic living space, living with others in a community setting, house meetings, etc.

  9. Assist with meal preparation for the following day

  10. Work with emergency personnel as needed to ensure client’s needs are being met.

  11. Administrative responsibilities.

  12. Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

    Experience and Education Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in human services or related field, or a High School diploma (or GED).

  • Two (2) years of experience working with individuals with mental health conditions, substance abuse issues, homelessness, or other significant barriers.

  • Preferred qualifications include the ability to speak fluent Spanish, experience in a residential setting, and having received training in Person-Centered approaches.

  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations (such as evacuate the Emergency Shelter by negotiating stairs in the event of a fire or disaster). 

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills, experience using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and other data collection systems, and the ability to lift up to 30 pounds also required.

  • Must be able to remain awake during evening hours.

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a valid NYSDL and have access to a vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Usual social services office working conditions prevail.  Must be able to work 20 hours per week during evening and weekend hours.  Must be available occasionally for required daytime meetings and supervision.  Supervision and training schedules may be negotiable.
