Executive Director-PROVIDENCE HOUSE

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for setting the strategic vision of the organization and ensuring that Providence House's overall operations, programmatic services and development strategies are effectively implemented in a manner that is consistent with the organization's mission, while assuring for the organization's sustainability and future growth. The Executive Director is responsible for promoting an organizational culture that fosters passion for the mission, cooperation, open communication and teamwork so as to achieve the organization's goals and sustain its programs. The Chief Operating Officer and Director of Development report directly to the Executive Director.

This position offers the Executive Director the opportunity to continue the vision set out by the Sisters of St. Joseph to transform the lives of homeless, abused, and formerly incarcerated women and their children and to continue its work in breaking the cycle of homelessness emphasizing the core values of community, non-violence, compassion and hospitality that are the underpinning to all its programs.

We seek an inspiring, forward thinking, and growth oriented leader who will set the strategic vision, oversee and direct all development efforts and spearhead program enhancement and development across the spectrum of services that Providence House provides. Perhaps most importantly, the Executive Director will show a total commitment to the mission of Providence House and totally accept and promote the core values of the organization.


Organizational Leadership & Management:

  • Provide leadership and direction to all staff, and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization to include effective decision-making processes that will enable Providence House to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives
  • Instill in all staff the sense of respect they should show to clients in all programs and to each other
  • Show solid commitment to the professional development of staff; successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team
  • Set clear priorities, delegate and guide investment in people and systems
  • Ensure the provision of high quality services in compliance with funding source requirements

Revenue Development/Communication:

  • Take an active leadership role in development activities and efforts of the organization and work closely with the Board in efforts to increase revenues from foundations, individual donors and corporate funders
  • Work toward growing Providence House’s funding  from private sources by aggressive outreach to current funders and new prospects while seeking to achieve fully sustainable funding from public sources
  • Instill in all staff the importance of fundraising in their dealings with outside constituents
  • Concentrate on raising money from major gifts with the thought of recruiting a seasoned major gifts officer to assist in that effort
  • Develop and leverage an on ongoing communications, public relations and branding strategy in order to raise visibility for Providence House as well as increase revenue for the organization

Fiscal Management:

  • Provide oversight to COO with regard to financial management of the organization, including but not limited to facilities management, housing development and associated capital improvements
  • Working closely with the COO, develop the annual budget for presentation to the Board, and develop proactive financial strategies that address an increasingly competitive and ever-changing landscape
  • Prudently manage Providence House’s budgetary guidelines insuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting
  • Assess viability of programs and implement a business plan that prioritizes programs and projects going forward

Board Relations:

  • Collaborate with the Board and direct the Chief Operating Officer in the implementation of the organization's strategic goals which could include an active strategic planning effort, while ensuring that the budget, staff, and priorities are aligned with Providence House's core mission
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals to be developed in a strategic plan
  • In partnership with the Board chair and nominating committee, help build a diverse and inclusive Board that is highly engaged and willing to leverage and secure resources

Government Relations:

  • Inform and advocate for public policies that affect the services and resources that government provides to Providence House’s population
  • Work with leaders within all levels of government on systemic changes relevant to the sector, including but not limited to the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS), Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) and New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS)
  • Continue existing and develop new collaborative relationships with other service providersin the field of homelessness and supportive housing, as well as training, employment and mental health service providers

Program Oversight:

  • Provide accountability for program compliance and quality assurance, and as necessary provide oversight regarding the development of new program initiatives
  • Keep abreast of current trends regarding Providence House’s programs and anticipate future development of new or expanding programs



  • Advanced degree in a relevant field desirable
  • A minimum  of 10 years of increasingly responsible executive experience in a complex, multi-site human service agency, government entity or faith-based organization, ideally in the field of homeless services/supportive housing; facilities management/real estate/government tax credit expertise a plus
  • Track record of motivating, leading and managing a skilled staff as well as evidence of success in recruiting senior and mid-level executives
  • Successful relationship builder with a track record of attracting funding especially from foundations and individuals; understanding the complexity of government funding
  • Have keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making
  • Financial acumen, budget oversight and forecasting skills with the ability to link strategic and operational goals to fiscal realities and program priorities
  • Strong presentation and communication skills so as to promote Providence House and build coalitions and relationships with a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Experience working collaboratively with a committed Board of Directors in executing mission and vision, creating and implementing a strategic plan with measurable outcomes, addressing infrastructure and housing needs and educating the Board concerning the challenges ahead
  • Proven ability to set an inspiring and galvanizing vision
