Controller-Center for Spectrum Services

Center for Spectrum Services has an immediate opening for a seasoned professional with nonprofit experience to become its next controller. She or he will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities for a nonprofit with a budget of $8,500,000 in addition to supervising a team of 4 staff members. She or he will collaborate as a member of the management team at Center for Spectrum Services.

The successful candidate will have 7-10 years accounting experience, including experience at a not-for-profit agency. Experience with NYS government funding is preferred. The controller reports to the administrative director.


Finance and Accounting Leadership

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep administrative director abreast of agency financial status.
  • Collaborate in the development of the agency annual budget and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Participate in the board’s audit and finance committees and prepare material for presentation and review.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the administrative director.
  • Coordinate/prepare all required financial documents for reporting to Board, bank, NYS Education Department, NYS Department of Health, local government funders and grantors. 

Team Leadership

  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement cross training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.


BA and/or MBA preferred; 7 to 10 years experience

Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to Center for Spectrum Services mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker with an advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software. Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance department and board members.
